Alisha Butani – Associate Tax Lawyer
Alisha Butani is an Associate Lawyer at Ummat Tax Law Professional Corporation. Alisha obtained her Honors Bachelor of Arts from McMaster University in 2018 and obtained her Juris Doctor from the University of Western Ontario in 2021. She was admitted to the Law Society of Ontario as a barrister and solicitor in 2022.
Alisha specializes in advising on and litigating income tax and GST/HST dispute matters against the Canada Revenue Agency. She is well-versed in all aspects of tax litigation which allows her to advise and assist clients with the following:
- CRA audit process;
- Drafting and filing of Notices of Objection, Notices of Appeal and Answers;
- Examinations for discovery, in either written form or orally in front of a court reporter;
- Prepare and negotiate settlement offers; and
- Hearing appearances.
Alisha can also assist with applications for voluntary disclosure, judicial review, and interest relief.
Alisha robustly and strategically advocates for her clients to advance their position in tax disputes. She has written various articles on tax matters such as one entitled “United States Federal, State, and Local Direct and Indirect Taxation of Virtual Currencies and Blockchain Assets” which was published in the textbook, A Practical Guide to Web3, Blockchain, and Smart Contract Law. Alisha has also presented on tax matters at conferences such as the Canada Women in Medicine Conference and at the Osgoode Hall School of Law Professional Development Program.
